Melissa Cederquist

Welcome to the

new wave of therapy,

with Melissa Cederquist!

I am incredibly honored that you are considering sharing parts of your story with me. At Cederquist Counseling, I strive to provide an uplifting, focused, and open-minded environment for therapy. Research indicates that the relationship between you and your therapist (the therapist alliance) is one of the most important factors in determining successful outcomes in therapy. Which is why I prioritize cultivating a nurturing and professional, yet approachable therapeutic relationship with my clients.

Bottom Line: it’s important that you like and trust your therapist!

I believe that therapy is one of the best things you can do for yourself. It is an investment in your future that can bring transformation across all avenues of life. Most people feel stuck in at least one area of their life. We repeatedly take the same actions, yet expect different results. Sometimes we may even think that other people have the responsibility to change, not us. However,

“the only thing we truly have control over in this life is ourselves.”

Universally, we all have patterns of behavior and ways of being with others, ourselves, and the world that we might want to better understand or change.

Therapy provides a pathway to making those changes by cultivating a strong therapeutic alliance and providing you with empirically backed tools to help get to where you want to be. The act of sharing your story with a compassionate, objective, third-party listener can be profoundly healing for your past, present, and future self. When someone else can witness your experience from an unbiased perspective, it allows you to

“see yourself more clearly, get unstuck, and begin shifting patterns of behavior that no longer serve you.”

The Power of Therapy

Beyond my personal belief in the power of therapy, research consistently supports its effectiveness in improving mental health and overall well-being. Studies show that therapy has a positive impact across a wide range of psychological concerns, from managing stress and anxiety to navigating relationship challenges and achieving personal growth. This sample of studies emphasizes therapy’s broad and long-lasting positive impact on mental health, emotional regulation, and overall quality of life.

A meta-analysis published in JAMA Psychiatry (2014) examined over 300 studies and found that psychotherapy, particularly cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), is highly effective in treating depression and anxiety disorders. The study reported that therapy was associated with significant improvements in symptoms, with benefits maintained long after treatment had ended (Cuijpers et al., 2014).

Research from the American Journal of Psychiatry (2017) suggests that psychotherapy can lead to actual changes in the brain. Functional MRI studies have shown that cognitive therapies can alter neural pathways associated with emotional regulation, demonstrating a biological mechanism behind therapeutic benefits (Lindner et al., 2017).

According to a study in Psychotherapy Research (2016), patients who engage in therapy report not only improvements in emotional symptoms but also higher life satisfaction and better interpersonal relationships. This highlights that the benefits of therapy extend beyond symptom reduction and contribute to overall well-being (Wampold, 2016).
